Would you follow someone who doesn't tweet?

Everyday I receive notifications in my e-mail's in-box notifying me when I have a new follower. The first  thing I look at is, what do we have in common? The second thing I determine is how many people follow the person, and most importantly--how many times has that person tweeted.

I've been seeing a lot of people with many follower's but very little tweets. I assume some of their followers are friends, family, or auto-follow backs, but what about the others? Why would you follow someone who  doesn't tweet? So my twitter question is this, would you follow someone who doesn't tweet, would it make a difference if you were a fan?

  1. I have a 6 month rule. If the person hasn't tweeted a single thing in the past 6 months, I don't follow (or unfollow - as I usually go through my lists a few times a year to make sure I'm still following people I want to be following)

  2. I see no point in following someone who never tweets. They don't have to make frequent posts ( I certainly don't), but if you're going to be on Twitter you might as well tweet occassionally. A little communication is nice.

  3. NOPE. When I notice you never tweet (and thanks to software I will notice) you are gone...

  4. No, I won't follow a person who doesn't tweet, actually, I don't really know why people are on twitter to just follow people without interacting. The interacting is what makes twitter so vibrant and I wouldn't be here, posting this without interacting with you. Plus, I met many lovely people through interactions. Twitter is a marketing platform, I try to retweet things that I find interesting, if everyone does it, we'd get word round, not by simply following people.

  5. As a general rule I don't follow people that don't tweet. However, I am following one person, who is a well-known writer that follows nobody and has never tweeted, but has an account set up and has several thousand followers just waiting for him to start using Twitter.

  6. I don't follow people who have followers but haven't tweeted yet unless something in their profile makes me think maybe I have a newcomer to Twiitter.

  7. Before I follow anyone I check a few things:

    1) Do they have a bio? If not, I won't follow. I want to know about the person first.

    2) Follower ratio. Do they follow significantly more people than they have followers? Then they're probably just following to build numbers and I won't be one of them.

    3) Tweets! Do they tweet? If not, I don't see the point. If they do, I look at their timeline to see what they tweet.

So...that was a long way of saying no. If they don't tweet, I don't understand the point of following.

  8. I do not follow anyone who doesn't tweet. It makes me think they have some motive for being on twitter other than social interaction, which seems skeevy to me.

There are some writers and people from my favorite TV shows who rarely tweet---some of them I follow, others I just add to a list. =)

  9. No. I don't follow people who don't tweet, as a rule. But not even JK Rowlings or Stephanie Meyer... I don't see the point. I probably would, however follow Robert Pattison if it were his real twitter account...so there are exceptions!

  10. I've followed celebs who tweet seldom or not at all. I just can't not if I'm that big of a fan. Anyone else who doesn't tweet, no.

  11. I agree with all the comments above. I am on Twitter to build relationships and you can't do this without 2-way communication.
